St. Rocco, a dog’s best friend St. Rocco is venerated throughout Southern Italy, Sicily, and Spain, and his patronage includes dogs and protection against disease. Free from all earthly cares, St. Roch joined the Third Order Franciscans, donned the familiar pilgrim's garb (a common practice of popular piety at the time) and set out on a pilgrimage to visit and pray at the holy places in Rome. When he came upon the town of Acquapendente near Viterbo, he saw that it was badly struck by the black plague which was wreaking havoc across Europe. He sojourned there for a time to care for the sick both in private homes and in the hospitals—at great risk to himself. Instead of contracting the highly contagious disease, St. Roch cured many people simply by making the Sign of the Cross over them. He continued his charitable work until the disease was halted from spreading further in the village, after which he continued on his pilgrimage. His miraculous healing power evidenced itself in the same manner in every plague-infested town that he passed through on his way to Rome, and in Rome itself. When his travels brought him to the town of Piacenza, he discovered that he was no longer spared from the deadly disease, having finally contracted it in the leg. Instead of burdening anyone with his sickness, he commended himself to God and awaited his death in a remote and abandoned forest hut. Providentially, a local nobleman's hunting dog found and befriended him, bringing him food daily and licking his wounds. A spring arose nearby to provide St. Roch with fresh water. The nobleman followed his dog into the woods one day, which led him to discover and aid the holy pilgrim. Slowly St. Roch's health was restored, after which he received divine inspiration that he should return to his native Montpellier. Once there he found the city at war. He refused to disclose his identity to the soldiers so that he could remain poor and unknown, having renounced his former life as the son of the governor. But his obfuscation aroused suspicion. He was accused of being a spy disguised as a pilgrim. St. Roch did not defend himself against these charges—wishing to conceal his true (and noble) identity—and instead entrusted himself completely to God's will. He was cast into prison by his own uncle, who failed to recognize his nephew's altered appearance. According to legend, St. Roch was forgotten and abandoned in prison—but God sent angels to minister to him while he was held in captivity. He died there five years later. As told by a Franciscan hagiographer, Marion A. Habig, O.F.M.: When he felt that his end was drawing near, Saint Roch asked that a priest might come and administer the last sacraments. The priest, on entering the prison, beheld it supernaturally lighted up and the poor captive surrounded with special radiance. As death claimed its victim, a tablet appeared on the wall on which an angelic hand wrote in golden letters the name of Roch, and the prediction that all who would invoke his intercession would be delivered from the plague. Informed of all that took place, Saint Roch's uncle came to the prison and, shortly after, also the governor's mother, that is, Roch's grandmother. She identified the dead man as her grandson by the birthmark of the red cross on his breast. They gave him a magnificent funeral and had a church built in his honor, in which his body was entombed. His veneration was approved by several popes and soon spread throughout Europe. Later, during the Council of Constance in 1414, the plague broke out again in Rome. The Council Fathers turned to St. Roch, the patron against the plague, and arranged that prayers and public processions be held in his honor, after which the plague ceased. Because of his patronage against infectious disease, St. Roch was a highly-regarded patron saint in the late Middle Ages, especially in those Italian towns in which he exercised his healing powers.

New year, new direction for area vitamin and health supplement guru Ruth Kendall, who recently purchased Just Organics, a produce delivery service based in Somers Point. Just Organics is an organic produce and grocery home delivery service offering fruits and vegetables, plus some marketplace items, to build into a box for a complete meal dropped at the doorstep. “What you’re going to get is the most abundant, beautiful array of four or five vegetables, four or five fruits. The value is definitely there, and you would probably spend more and get less at ShopRite,” Kendall said. Kendall has been involved in the natural foods and supplement industry for decades. She said her wellness journey began during her first pregnancy, when she wanted to feed her baby well and supplement herself properly. Two years later, her second child was born with Hereditary Multiple Osteochondromas, requiring her to learn much more to provide for his nutritional needs. “When it comes to helping people with their health, they need to know where you came from,” Kendall said. “His condition required me to really step it up. It’s why I took it to the level I am now.” She said she started eating organic more than 30 years ago, when it was “unaffordable, unattainable” and had to be purchased through cooperatives or community agriculture. Now, it's easy to purchase organic products almost anywhere. The difference, she said, is the freshness and quality. That’s where her new venture ties into her old. Kendall and her husband, Keith, have owned and operated The Honey Tree natural foods store in Northfield since 2015 after being longtime customers of and working for former owner Ron Groff. He had started the business in the late 1980s in a satellite store at the Tilton Shopping Center. They offer high-end quality vitamins, supplements, all-natural hair and skin care, and all-natural foods that are healthy and free of contaminants, additives and artificial ingredients, according to their website, honeytree.net. “Our products are chosen based on efficacy and overall quality, ensuring that we bring you only the best,” Kendall said. Also available at The Honey Tree is a wide variety of organic, gluten-free, plant-based/vegan, paleo and preservative-free natural foods, as well as high-quality CBD products. The Kendalls also provide consultations and will continue to do so, not only for the vitamins and supplements but also for the organic produce and associated products. “Tell me what you eat and let’s find the best choice for you,” Kendall said of her philosophy. Just Organics at 23 Somers Point-Mays Landings Road, Unit 1, is located near the intersection of Route 9 in Somers Point, New Jersey. Kendall has the products from The Honey Tree out front while also offering fresh organic produce, the primary part of Just Organics — its produce delivery service — in the back. “Organic fruits and vegetables is a new venture for us,” she said. However, Just Organics has been around since 2015, well before the trend of home delivery took off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kendall said while they will continue to ship vitamins and supplements via mail, as well as through their home-delivery service, she never would allow a third party to deliver her produce. “I will never deliver food via the mail. It doesn’t hold up, the quality is not going to hold up,” she said, noting she would lose chain of custody and have to depend on someone else. Just Organics, on which the Kendalls have partnered with Glen and Donna Ellenbart, has five drivers, each assigned to a specific area. Their products are available for delivery throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties. “They know the customers, know the routes, live in the community,” she said. “We’re trying to limit the number of people touching your stuff.” Kendall said she is creating a model based on sustainability, using recycled boxes that customers can reuse.

Donald A. Guardian 2nd District - Part of Atlantic County Don Guardian has been an Assemblyman since 2022 and assistant Republican whip since January 2024. Guardian earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1975 from Upsala College in East Orange. His first job after graduation was with the Boy Scouts of America, where he worked until 1980. He was a Claridge Casino Hotel executive from 1991 to 1993 and ran the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority's Special Improvement District from 1992 until 2013. He most recently served as Toms River Township business administrator. Previously, Guardian was Mayor of Atlantic City from 2014 to 2018. In a city with just 10% Republican registration, he became the first Republican Mayor in almost 25 years. If you are a pet owner and live in Atlantic County, perhaps you have either heard of or taken your pets to Dr. Mark Newkirk or the offices he founded in Margate and Egg Harbor Township. While the Margate location closed in the early 2000s, Newkirk Family Veterinarians in Egg Harbor Township took its place. Even though Dr. Newkirk retired from working at his office a few years ago, he has not quite stopped his veterinarian practices. Now that he no longer works at his office in EHT, he travels out of the country to help endangered animals and abandoned pets with organizations like World Vets and the African Conservation Experience. He has recently visited Africa, Russia, Ukraine, and Thailand. Dr. Newkirk has been working with animals for nearly his entire life. When he was just 14 years old, he got a job at the Margate Animal Hospital, which he eventually took over. During his college years, as he stated, “...I wanted to actually be a zoo veterinarian back in the 1980s and did an externship at the Philadelphia Zoo. The problem in those days was zoos were designed for people and not for animals.” Nowadays, zoos are equipped with veterinarians for animal rehabilitation centers, but back then, zoos cared more about paying customers than the animals on display for their entertainment. Since no zoo offered what Dr. Newkirk was looking for, he returned to the Margate Animal Hospital. Now that he is retired, he returned to his passion as he said, “...I have the time, and… There are many volunteer programs in Africa and worldwide to work with these types of animals. So I kind of went back to my first love.” Dr. Newkirk travels out of the country for about four months each year to help animals. In South Africa, he has worked with various animal species. His favorites to work with are big cats working like lions and cheetahs. In South Africa, there are lion and cheetah rescues and reserves. These big cats have had their land encroached on by humans, who have turned much of the country into farmland. Many remaining natural areas are fenced off, which cannot always contain them. Now, there is an issue of lions and cheetahs being shot by farmers who are trying to protect their livestock. Dr. Newkirk has also worked with elephants. In Thailand, he worked at an elephant rescue center and conservation reserve. In South Africa, he helped organizations handle the issue of overpopulation. While endangered, they overrun Kruger National Park and find their way onto farmland, often destroying crops. Dr. Newkirk has also volunteered at Hluhuwe-iMfolozi Park with research on wild dogs. He worked with researchers and veterinarians to study and help all different kinds of African Wild Dogs. He was there when the pack was getting so big that there was not enough prey. So Dr. Newkirk helped split the pack and transfer some dogs to other African parks. On top of helping organizations keep lion, cheetah, elephant, and wild dog populations a healthy size, Dr. Newkirk has also worked with rhinoceroses during his time in Africa. He has joined the fight against poaching rhinos. The organizations that Dr. Newkirk helps out at are all nonprofit.

Dr Jean Dodds became a veterinarian in 1964 after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College, and has spent more than 5 decades as a clinical research veterinarian. From 1965-1986, she was a member of many national and international committees on hematology, animal models of human disease, veterinary medicine, and laboratory animal science. Dr. Dodds was a grantee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH) and has over 150 research publications. Dr Dodds started Hemopet in 1986, the first non-profit national animal blood bank. Today, Hemopet’s range of nonprofit services and educational activities include: providing canine blood components and related services; adopting retired Greyhound blood donors as companions; and the Hemolife diagnostic division focused on hematology and blood banking, immunology, endocrinology, nutrition and holistic medicine (www.hemopet.org). She is also Co-Trustee of the Rabies Challenge Fund, a non-profit project to assess the duration of immunity and safety of current rabies vaccines for animals (www.rabieschallengefund.org). Dr Dodds actively participates in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) and the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation. She has written 2 popular award-winning pet health books together with Diana Laverdure; and holds 25 patents.

Dr. Bradford Tucker has always been attracted to repairing things and restoring them to working order. It’s what attracted him to orthopedics. “I have always loved fixing things and was a carpenter as a teenager. In grade school, I learned about a job that fixes bones and joints, called orthopedic surgery. I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” he says. Dr. Tucker is board certified in both orthopedic sports medicine and general orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He repairs and rebuilds unstable and damaged parts of the knee and shoulder and performs cartilage repair and restoration. He is assistant team orthopedic surgeon for the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia 76ers. He is also a team orthopedic surgeon for Stockton University and Ocean City and Absegami High Schools. A graduate of Rutgers University, Dr. Tucker earned his M.D. at UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he also served his general surgery internship and his orthopedic surgery residency. He served a fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at University of California, San Diego. He completed additional post-graduate training in sports medicine at Rutgers and in musculoskeletal oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Through his affiliation with the Rothman Institute, Philadelphia, he is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, where he is involved in peer-reviewed orthopedic research, including clinical applications of stem cells. He is also a clinical faculty member at Stockton and has many publications and book chapters to his credit. He credits his mom for inspiring his career in medicine. “My mother, Susan Verna Tucker, is the most compassionate, hard-working, kindest person I have ever met. I try to emulate her in both my career and personal life,” he says. Dr. Tucker lives in Ocean City with his wife and three children. Jefferson H. Van Drew born February 23, 1953 is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for New Jersey's 2nd congressional district since 2019. He was first elected as a Democrat and later switched to the Republican Party in 2020. Before being elected to Congress, Van Drew held several public offices, including fire commissioner, township committee member, Mayor of Dennis Township, New Jersey, and Cape May County Freeholder. He represented New Jersey's 1st legislative district in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2008, and represented the same district in the New Jersey Senate from 2008 to 2018. Van Drew was the Democratic nominee in New Jersey's 2nd congressional district in the 2018 election. He was elected with 52.9% of the vote to Republican Seth Grossman's 45.2%. After opposing the first impeachment of Donald Trump, Van Drew joined the Republican Party shortly afterward. He was reelected in 2020, defeating Democratic challenger Amy Kennedy. Van Drew later supported the unsuccessful attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election. Van Drew was born in New York City. He attended Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey, for two years, before transferring to St. Mary’s High School in Perth Amboy, where he graduated in 1971,[2] along with fellow classmate and future New Jersey congressman Chris Smith. He graduated with a B.S. from Rutgers University and received a D.M.D. degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Van Drew operated a dental practice in South Jersey for 30 years before retiring. Van Drew served on the Dennis Township Committee in 1991, and as mayor from 1994 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2003. He served on the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1994 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2002. He was a Dennis Township Fire Commissioner from 1983 to 1986. In 1994, as a Cape May County Freeholder, Van Drew made support for a local community college a major campaign issue. In 2002, ground was broken on the site of the future Atlantic Cape Community College campus in Cape May County. Van Drew was a member of the Democratic Party while a local officeholder. Van Drew represented the 1st Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2008. He represented the same district in the New Jersey Senate from 2008 to 2018. He was a Democrat during this period. On November 6, 2007, Van Drew was elected to the New Jersey Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Nicholas Asselta. In November 2011, Van Drew defeated Republican challenger David S. DeWeese, 24,557 votes to 20,857. He was reelected in 2013, defeating Upper Township Republican businesswoman Susan Adelizzi Schmidt by 20 points. For the 2018–19 session, Van Drew served in the Senate on the Community and Urban Affairs Committee (as chair), the Military and Veterans' Affairs (as vice chair), the Joint Committee on Housing Affordability and the Intergovernmental Relations Commission. In 2008, he sponsored the Fair Market Drug Pricing Act to establish the "New Jersey Rx Card Program to reduce prescription drug prices."

The Chief of Police is the highest-ranking officer in the Police Department. As a general manager of the Police Department, the Chief is responsible for the planning, efficient administration and operation of the Police Department. Responsibilities of the Chief of Police The Chief of Police directs, plans, and coordinates the enforcement the ordinances of the Township, and the laws of the state and nation for the purpose of protecting persons and property and for the preservation of the peace of the community. The Chief is responsible for testifying before the Township Committee, the state and national legislative bodies on law enforcement matters of importance to the Township of Egg Harbor, as well as proposing new or amending existing legislation which could have an impact on law enforcement. The Chief attends various meetings to keep members informed about any issue related to the Department’s operations, and to respond to citizens’ complaints or concerns. The Chief acts on all matters related to disciplinary issues and recommends awards for exemplary conduct of the Department’s sworn and civilian employees. The Chief also makes presentations to private citizens’ community groups, churches, schools, and the business and industrial community to promote the goals and missions of the Police Department and to solicit their input in making the Township of Egg Harbor a safe place in which to live, visit and conduct business. During a state of emergency such as civil disturbance in the Township, the Chief assumes a leadership role in planning, coordinating and directing all activities aimed at restoring peace in the Township or otherwise returning conditions to normal. The Chief has jurisdiction within the Township of Egg Harbor and line command authority over 90 sworn and 37 civilian employees. The official duties of the Chief are described in the Township Code. The Egg Harbor Township Police Department (EHTPD) is an organization of approximately 130 women and men who are responsible for maintaining a safe, crime-free environment. The Chief of Police administers an annual budget of approximately 11 million dollars and has over 90 sworn officers under his jurisdiction. New year, new direction for area vitamin and health supplement guru Ruth Kendall, who recently purchased Just Organics, a produce delivery service based in Somers Point. Just Organics is an organic produce and grocery home delivery service offering fruits and vegetables, plus some marketplace items, to build into a box for a complete meal dropped at the doorstep. “What you’re going to get is the most abundant, beautiful array of four or five vegetables, four or five fruits. The value is definitely there, and you would probably spend more and get less at ShopRite,” Kendall said. Kendall has been involved in the natural foods and supplement industry for decades. She said her wellness journey began during her first pregnancy, when she wanted to feed her baby well and supplement herself properly. Two years later, her second child was born with Hereditary Multiple Osteochondromas, requiring her to learn much more to provide for his nutritional needs. “When it comes to helping people with their health, they need to know where you came from,” Kendall said. “His condition required me to really step it up. It’s why I took it to the level I am now.” She said she started eating organic more than 30 years ago, when it was “unaffordable, unattainable” and had to be purchased through cooperatives or community agriculture. Now, she said, it’s easy to purchase organic almost anywhere. The difference, she said, is the freshness and quality. That’s where her new venture ties into her old. Kendall and her husband, Keith, have owned and operated The Honey Tree natural foods store in Northfield since 2015 after being longtime customers of and working for former owner Ron Groff. He had started the business in the late 1980s in a satellite store at the Tilton Shopping Center. They offer high-end quality vitamins, supplements, all-natural hair and skin care, and all-natural foods that are healthy and free of contaminants, additives and artificial ingredients, according to their website, honeytree.net. “Our products are chosen based on efficacy and overall quality, ensuring that we bring you only the best,” Kendall said. Also available at The Honey Tree is a wide variety of organic, gluten-free, plant-based/vegan, paleo and preservative-free natural foods, as well as high-quality CBD products. The Kendalls also provide consultations and will continue to do so, not only for the vitamins and supplements but also for the organic produce and associated products. “Tell me what you eat and let’s find the best choice for you,” Kendall said of her philosophy. Just Organics at 23 Somers Point-Mays Landings Road, Unit 1, is located near the intersection of Route 9 in Somers Point, New Jersey. Kendall has the products from The Honey Tree out front while also offering fresh organic produce, the primary part of Just Organics — its produce delivery service — in the back. “Organic fruits and vegetables is a new venture for us,” she said. However, Just Organics has been around since 2015, well before the trend of home delivery took off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kendall said while they will continue to ship vitamins and supplements via mail, as well as through their home-delivery service, she never would allow a third party to deliver her produce. “I will never deliver food via the mail. It doesn’t hold up, the quality is not going to hold up,” she said, noting she would lose chain of custody and have to depend on someone else. Just Organics, on which the Kendalls have partnered with Glen and Donna Ellenbart, has five drivers, each assigned to a specific area. Their products are available for delivery throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties. “They know the customers, know the routes, live in the community,” she said. “We’re trying to limit the number of people touching your stuff.” Kendall said she is creating a model based on sustainability, using recycled boxes that customers can reuse.

Dr Jean Dodds became a veterinarian in 1964 after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College, and has spent more than 5 decades as a clinical research veterinarian. From 1965-1986, she was a member of many national and international committees on hematology, animal models of human disease, veterinary medicine, and laboratory animal science. Dr. Dodds was a grantee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH) and has over 150 research publications. Dr Dodds started Hemopet in 1986, the first non-profit national animal blood bank. Today, Hemopet’s range of nonprofit services and educational activities include: providing canine blood components and related services; adopting retired Greyhound blood donors as companions; and the Hemolife diagnostic division focused on hematology and blood banking, immunology, endocrinology, nutrition and holistic medicine (www.hemopet.org). Lori Nordt is a 1992 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine. She practiced as an associate veterinarian in southern New Jersey for 12 years before opening Atlantic Animal Health Center in 2005. She is active in animal welfare providing services to many non-profit animal rescue groups including Alley Cat Allies, Cape Atlantic Cats, Wildlife Aid, Animal Network, and Penny's Angel's Beagle Rescue. Other community projects include low cost spay/neuter services for TNR organizations and sponsoring the annual Spay Day event providing free surgical services for pets of low income families. In addition, Dr. Nordt finds loving homes for 50+ cats and kittens annually through Atlantic Animal Health Center's adoption center. If you are a pet owner and live in Atlantic County, perhaps you have either heard of or taken your pets to Dr. Mark Newkirk or the offices he founded in Margate and Egg Harbor Township. While the Margate location closed in the early 2000s, Newkirk Family Veterinarians in Egg Harbor Township took its place. Even though Dr. Newkirk retired from working at his office a few years ago, he has not quite stopped his veterinarian practices. Now that he no longer works at his office in EHT, he travels out of the country to help endangered animals and abandoned pets with organizations like World Vets and the African Conservation Experience. He has recently visited Africa, Russia, Ukraine, and Thailand. Dr. Newkirk has been working with animals for nearly his entire life. When he was just 14 years old, he got a job at the Margate Animal Hospital, which he eventually took over. During his college years, as he stated, “...I wanted to actually be a zoo veterinarian back in the 1980s and did an externship at the Philadelphia Zoo. The problem in those days was zoos were designed for people and not for animals.” Nowadays, zoos are equipped with veterinarians for animal rehabilitation centers, but back then, zoos cared more about paying customers than the animals on display for their entertainment. Since no zoo offered what Dr. Newkirk was looking for, he returned to the Margate Animal Hospital. Now that he is retired, he returned to his passion as he said, “...I have the time, and… There are many volunteer programs in Africa and worldwide to work with these types of animals. So I kind of went back to my first love.” Dr. Newkirk travels out of the country for about four months each year to help animals. In South Africa, he has worked with various animal species. His favorites to work with are big cats working like lions and cheetahs. In South Africa, there are lion and cheetah rescues and reserves. These big cats have had their land encroached on by humans, who have turned much of the country into farmland. Many remaining natural areas are fenced off, which cannot always contain them. Now, there is an issue of lions and cheetahs being shot by farmers who are trying to protect their livestock. Dr. Newkirk has also worked with elephants. In Thailand, he worked at an elephant rescue center and conservation reserve. In South Africa, he helped organizations handle the issue of overpopulation. While endangered, they overrun Kruger National Park and find their way onto farmland, often destroying crops. Dr. Newkirk has also volunteered at Hluhuwe-iMfolozi Park with research on wild dogs. He worked with researchers and veterinarians to study and help all different kinds of African Wild Dogs. He was there when the pack was getting so big that there was not enough prey. So Dr. Newkirk helped split the pack and transfer some dogs to other African parks. On top of helping organizations keep lion, cheetah, elephant, and wild dog populations a healthy size, Dr. Newkirk has also worked with rhinoceroses during his time in Africa. He has joined the fight against poaching rhinos. The organizations that Dr. Newkirk helps out at are all nonprofit.
